What Helped My Baby Sleep Better (What Actually Worked for Us)

I’ll be honest — the newborn sleep stage nearly broke me.

I was exhausted, emotional, and constantly second-guessing everything. Some nights felt endless. I remember googling “why won’t my baby sleep” at 3AM more times than I can count.

After trial and error (and lots of coffee), I found a few things that truly made a difference. Not magic fixes — but real tools and routines that helped my baby sleep longer and more peacefully.

If you’re in the sleep-deprived phase right now, I see you 🤍

Here’s what actually worked for us.

🛌 1. A Good Sleep Sack (Total Game-Changer)

Once we switched to a quality sleep sack, bedtime became more predictable. It kept baby cozy without loose blankets and became part of our sleep cue.

Why it helped us:
✔ Baby stayed warm all night
✔ No startle reflex wake-ups
✔ Helped signal “it’s sleep time”

🌊 2. A Sound Machine (This Was HUGE)

This might have been the biggest difference-maker. Babies are used to noise in the womb, so silence can actually wake them.

The sound machine helped drown out household noise and created a consistent sleep environment.

Why this worked for us:
✔ Fewer wake-ups from noise
✔ Helped baby fall asleep faster
✔ Great for naps too

I’ve personally used and still use the Hatch Baby and Momcozy Sound machines and LOVE THEM! My mom friends also swear by the Nanit sound machine.

🌑 3. Blackout Curtains (Underrated but Powerful)

Once we darkened the room properly, naps got longer and bedtime became easier.

Light tells babies it’s time to wake up — darkness helps their body stay asleep.

Why we swear by these:
✔ Longer naps
✔ Better early mornings
✔ Easier bedtime routine

🤍 4. Gentle Sleep Training (We Did This — and It Helped)

I was nervous about sleep training, but doing a gentle, consistent method changed everything. It helped my baby learn to fall asleep independently instead of needing to be rocked every time.

This wasn’t about letting baby cry endlessly — it was about teaching sleep skills in a calm, predictable way.

What it gave us:
✔ More consistent nights
✔ Less rocking and bouncing
✔ Baby learned to self-soothe

🌙 5. A Soft Night Light for Night Feeds

Bright lights fully wake babies. A dim, warm light made night feeds smoother and kept baby drowsy.
You can use any of the sound machines listed above BUT if you want a simple night light, these are great options.

🌙 Our Sleep Routine (This Made Everything Work Together)

Bath → Pajamas → Sleep Sack → Sound Machine On → Same Goodnight Words

Babies thrive on predictability, and this routine became a powerful sleep cue.

✨ Final Thoughts

Baby sleep is one of the hardest parts of motherhood. These products and gentle sleep training didn’t fix everything overnight — but together, they helped us go from survival mode to actual rest.
